Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett Put Their Record-Store Reflexes to Work on Track Star

Dave Grohl joined Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett on Track Star, where the Foo Fighters members rapidly identified songs by The Clash, Minor Threat, NOFX, and more as the band prepares for an expansive international tour.

Dave Grohl appeared on a new episode of Track Star with Foo Fighters bandmates Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett, and the three moved quickly through a headphone-based song ID challenge that leaned heavily on punk and rock staples.

The format is simple: each player hears a track and has to name it as fast as possible. Mendel quickly identified The Clash’s London Calling and Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen in Love. Shiflett reacted to Van Halen’s Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love by pulling off his headphones and saying, “are you joking?”, then immediately recognized NOFX’s Linoleum, though he hesitated on Sonic Youth’s Teen Age Riot.

Grohl named Minor Threat’s Straight Edge within seconds and said, “these are too easy,” adding that “all you need to hear is the guitars and the tone.” He also used the moment to discuss Minor Threat’s role in Washington, D.C. punk and the early Dischord Records scene. Later in the episode, he also spoke about Melvins, Void, and Harry Belafonte.

The video arrives as Foo Fighters continue their current album cycle for Your Favorite Toy. The band recently confirmed the record’s title was changed due to a conflict tied to Wicked: For Good. They are preparing for a major run of dates across Europe and North America, including two shows at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium at the end of June, followed by Australia and New Zealand dates scheduled for late 2026 and early 2027.
