Britney Spears avoids jail time in DUI case after pleading guilty to reckless driving

Britney Spears avoided jail in her Ventura County DUI case after pleading guilty to reduced reckless driving charges. The plea deal includes 12 months of informal probation, DUI classes, vehicle search compliance, and ongoing mental health treatment.

Britney Spears has avoided jail time in her DUI case after pleading guilty to a lesser misdemeanour charge of reckless driving.

The singer was arrested on March 4 in Ventura County, California, after police pulled her over on suspicion of driving under the influence following reports of erratic, high-speed driving. She was later charged with one misdemeanour count of DUI.

At a hearing on Monday (May 4), the case was resolved through a plea agreement. Spears pleaded guilty through her lawyer to a reduced misdemeanour count of reckless driving, known in California as a “wet reckless,” which applies to cases involving alcohol or drugs but carries a lighter penalty than DUI. Prosecutors dismissed the original DUI charge.

Under the agreement, Spears was sentenced to 12 months of informal probation. She must comply with court-ordered conditions, including vehicle searches if requested by law enforcement, attending DUI education classes, and continuing regular mental health treatment.

Her lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, said:

“She’s doing well. It was reduced. The DUI was dismissed. She entered a plea to reckless driving.”

He added:

“I don’t think anybody is happy about pleading guilty. We appreciate the district attorney recognising the positive steps Britney has taken to help herself, and we expect that she’ll continue to do so.”

Last month, Spears voluntarily checked herself into a rehabilitation facility. She also addressed the incident publicly, posting a video of herself dancing with her 19-year-old son, Jayden Federline, and thanking fans for their support.

This is not the first legal case tied to Spears’ driving. In 2007, she faced charges in a hit-and-run case. Those charges were later dropped, and a jury acquitted her of driving without a valid California license.

In recent years, Spears has remained in the public spotlight following the release of her memoir, The Woman In Me, which detailed her career, relationships, 13-year conservatorship, and personal life.

After publication, her ex-husband Kevin Federline accused her of cocaine use during a period when she was breastfeeding their children. Spears responded by suggesting Federline was trying to “profit off [her] pain.”

In 2023, Spears also denied separate rumours alleging her family was concerned about drug issues, calling those claims “not true.”

She also reportedly sold her full music catalogue to Primary Wave for an undisclosed amount in the final days of 2025.
