Slift have released “The Day Of Execution,” a new single from Fantasia, out June 5 on Sub Pop. The French trio say the song explores memory loss, nostalgia, and the alienation of a city that no longer remembers itself.

French power trio Slift have released “The Day Of Execution,” a new single from their upcoming album Fantasia, due June 5 via Sub Pop.
The track opens with a dense, low-end guitar figure and quickly expands into a louder, more urgent section led by shouted vocals. Midway through, Slift shift into a long, psychedelic passage before returning to a heavier closing movement, leaning into the band’s mix of space rock, prog, and metal weight.
In a press statement, the band said the song addresses “the effect of time passing on each and every one of us, and about memory loss.” They added: “It portrays the nostalgia that creeps into us as time goes by. Fantasia is such an ancient city that it no longer remembers itself, and this gradually alienates its inhabitants.”
The release arrives after lead single “A Storm Of Wings,” and continues the rollout for Fantasia.
The song’s animated video, directed by Ben Amos Cooper, is out now.
