Joey Valence & Brae Rework Amyl and the Sniffers’ ‘Security’ on triple j’s Like A Version

Joey Valence & Brae turned Amyl and the Sniffers’ 2021 song “Security” into a fast, synth-heavy dance-rap track during their appearance on triple j’s Like A Version.

The performance landed while the duo were on the Australian leg of the HYPERYOUTH World Tour. They are touring behind their second album, HYPERYOUTH, and used the session to strip out the original’s pub-rock guitars in favor of electronic production, heavy low end and quick back-and-forth vocals.

Speaking during the session, Brae said the pair picked the song because of how direct it feels. “Just has so much energy. As soon as you hear it, you want to bounce off the wall,” he said. “So we knew we had to cover that one.”

The duo also pointed to Amy Taylor’s delivery and the rough, loose feel of the recording, which helped make Comfort To Me a key release for the band overseas. Released in 2021, “Security” appears on that album, which reached the top 25 on the Australian albums chart and widened Amyl and The Sniffers’ profile internationally.

That record later helped send the Melbourne band onto bigger festival bills and larger touring circuits, with Taylor becoming one of contemporary punk’s most visible frontpeople. Joey Valence & Brae’s version moves the track into a different lane entirely, folding in dance music, early Beastie Boys-style rap cadences and the hyperactive electronic textures that already define their catalog.

HYPERYOUTH was released last year and features collaborations with JPEGMAFIA, Rebecca Black and TiaCorine. The album was produced, mixed and mastered entirely by Valence in his Pennsylvania bedroom studio.

Their Like A Version set came after stops in Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth on the HYPERYOUTH World Tour.
