The Psychedelic Furs cancel spring and summer North American tour dates over ‘serious medical issue’

The Psychedelic Furs have cancelled their spring and summer North American tour dates because of what they described as a “serious medical issue” in the band.

The London post-punk group had only recently announced a broad run of dates across North America this summer, with Living Colour set to support. Before that, they were scheduled to play a separate string of U.S. shows with We Are Scientists.

In a statement shared Friday, May 8, the band said: “Due to a serious medical issue in the band, the tour dates scheduled for spring and summer are being cancelled.” They did not give any further details about the issue.

They added: “Please accept our deepest apologies for the inconvenience. Refunds are available at point of purchase. More soon.”

The band’s only remaining show on the calendar is their appearance at the Darker Waves Festival in California on November 14.

The cancellation comes as the band has also been back in the spotlight through Netflix’s Stranger Things. Their 1981 song “Pretty in Pink” appears in the opening episode of the fifth and final season, The Crawl.

Thommy Price, the drummer who played with Joan Jett and Billy Idol and also contributed to The Psychedelic Furs records, died last October at 68. Former band producer Dave Jerden also died last year, aged 75.

The Psychedelic Furs remain one of the key UK post-punk and new wave bands of the early to mid-1980s. Their profile crossed into the mainstream after “Pretty in Pink” inspired the mood and title of John Hughes’ 1986 film of the same name.

Fronted by Richard Butler, with brother Tim Butler on bass, the band was active from 1977 until their split in 1992. They reunited in 2000 and released their first album in 29 years, Made Of Rain, in 2020.
