“Weird Al” Yankovic Broadway Musical Dare to Be Stupid Is in the Works

A Broadway jukebox musical about “Weird Al” Yankovic, titled Dare to Be Stupid, is in development with Alex Timbers directing.

A Broadway jukebox musical about “Weird Al” Yankovic is in development, according to Deadline. The show is titled Dare to Be Stupid, and its soundtrack will draw from Yankovic’s long run of parody tracks, including “White & Nerdy” (his version of Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’”), “Amish Paradise” (Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise”), “Eat It” (“Beat It”), “Like a Surgeon” (“Like a Virgin”) and “Smells Like Nirvana.”

Yankovic addressed the project in a statement to Deadline. “Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community,” he said. “Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.”

Alex Timbers is set to direct. Timbers previously directed All In, the Broadway production built around the Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs, as well as Here Lies Love, the David Byrne and Fatboy Slim disco musical.

The announcement follows Yankovic’s 2022 biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which starred Daniel Radcliffe as the musician. Yankovic also has 90 shows scheduled across North America between now and mid-October.
