Oklou and Theodora covered The Beatles’ “Get Back” at Cannes as Peter Jackson received the Honorary Palme d’Or.

The Cannes Film Festival opened today with an unusual musical moment: Oklou and Theodora performed The Beatles’ “Get Back” during the opening ceremony, where Peter Jackson was also honored with the Honorary Palme d’Or.
Jackson, a longtime Beatles devotee and the director of the 2021 documentary The Beatles: Get Back, was seated at the side of the stage as the song played. The title connection was hard to miss. He was caught singing along as the two artists worked through the cover.
Oklou is already a familiar name to many listeners. Her 2025 album Choke Enough was one of last year’s standout releases, and this year she is serving as one of the Cannes International Critics’ Week jury members. Theodora, a French-Congolese artist, may be less widely known, though she has been flagged by global pop audiences as one to watch.
With Oklou on guitar, the pair delivered a version of “Get Back” that leaned stripped-back while still carrying an electronic edge. The performance was backed by a light show with a ’70s feel. Jackson and host Eye Haïdara were visible watching from the side of the stage, a distraction that only added to the odd, slightly surreal tone of the whole scene.
