Purity Ring’s Megan James Launches Solo Project MMJ With First Single “Nobody Knows”
Purity Ring’s Megan James has launched solo project MMJ and shared the first single from her upcoming album, “Nobody Knows.”
MMJ now has a new meaning. Megan James, one half of Purity Ring, has launched a solo project under those initials and shared its first single, “Nobody Knows.”
James first announced the project last month. At the time, she said she had signed with Captured Tracks and would be opening for Purity Ring on the group’s upcoming tour with a solo set. “Nobody Knows” is the first track to surface from the new album.
The song moves in a different direction from the synth-heavy sound associated with Purity Ring. James leans into a more acoustic, singer-songwriter approach here, opening with the lines: “Nobody knows/ A fallen star/ From wildfire ash/ Raining down on the yard.”
“It presents the ways we know so little, but also the things we deny and can see if we choose to, and what we should see and be in order to survive in this place; what we deserve to have and be as individuals and collectively,” James says of the track. “‘Nobody Knows’ is circular, a fractal glimpse of humanity in the span of a song. I hope you feel it.”
