BBC Begins Filming Beatles Drama Hamburg Days in Germany
The BBC has started filming Hamburg Days, a six-part Beatles drama set in Hamburg and featuring Rhys Mannion, Ellis Murphy and more.
Filming has started on Hamburg Days, the BBC’s six-part Beatles drama about the band’s early years in Hamburg before fame took hold.
The series is shooting in Merseyside and Munich, with Succession writer Jamie Carragher behind the script. The Crown’s Christian Schwochow and Call My Agent Berlin’s Laura Lackmann are directing.
Based on an autobiography by artist Klaus Voormann, the story is set in the “smoke-filled clubs of Hamburg’s St. Pauli’s red-light district.” In that world, “an inexperienced young rock ‘n’ roll band from Liverpool collide with two young artists, Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr,” according to the synopsis. “Together they help spark a transformation that turns a scrappy group of teenagers into the greatest music phenomenon the world has ever known: The Beatles.”

Rhys Mannion plays John Lennon, Ellis Murphy is Paul McCartney, Harvey Brett is George Harrison, and Louis Landau and Patrick Gilmore portray early band members Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Luna Jordan stars as Kirchherr, Laura Tonke plays her mother Nielsa, and Casper von Bülow appears as Voormann.
BBC Head of Scripted Pre-buy Acquisitions Sue Deeks previously said: “Hamburg Days is the fascinating story of how, in the space of two short years, a raw young band from Liverpool honed their music skills in Hamburg, before returning home to become an overnight worldwide success. It is an incredible story, accompanied (of course) by an amazing soundtrack!”
The project arrives as work continues on Sam Mendes’ four Beatles films, due in cinemas in 2028. Paul Mescal is set to play Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson John Lennon, Joseph Quinn George Harrison and Barry Keoghan Ringo Starr. Saoirse Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Aimee Lou Wood is Pattie Boyd, Anna Sawai is Yoko Ono, Mia McKenna-Bruce is Maureen Starkey, and James Norton has been cast as Brian Epstein.
Elsewhere, Steven Soderbergh is working on John Lennon: The Last Interview, a documentary that will use generative AI.
In another Beatles-related update, 3 Savile Row, the London address long tied to the band, will open to the public for the first time next year as the first official Beatles fan experience. Visitors will have access to seven floors of material from Apple Corps’ archives, plus rotating exhibitions, a fan store and a recreation of the original studio where Let It Be was recorded.
Paul McCartney has also just released his first-ever duet with Starr, “Home To Us,” which is out now.
