Cold Court share “Backslang,” a frantic new single from their EP \ (^_^) /, out self-released on 6/19.
Philadelphia siblings Mini Serrano and Jojo Lavina-Maldonado, who record as Cold Court, have never been shy about their influences. They say they “grew up on Skrillex and 100 gecs,” and their new single “Backslang” backs that up with a sharp, chaotic rush of noise-pop that feels pulled in several directions at once.
The track arrives ahead of the duo’s new EP \ (^_^) /, due next month and self-released on 6/19. It follows lead single “Burn,” which was posted earlier. “Backslang” pushes harder, with huge drums, guitars, and synth sounds that keep breaking in from different angles. It also brings to mind MSPAINT, which is a fair comparison given how confrontational the song sounds.
Mini Serrano described the song as a back-and-forth between the two siblings. “Backslang” started as an argument over who should sing it. Serrano says he thought Jojo should handle vocals, since he would when the band played it live. Then Jojo asked him to “feel it out” instead. Serrano wrote lyrics that mocked him as part of the dispute to see if he would notice. He didn’t.
“Backslang” is this indirect conversation between me and Jojo. We had been arguing about which of us should sing it. I felt he should, since he would whenever we played the song live, but seemingly out of nowhere he asked me to “feel it out” instead. I wrote the lyrics kinda mocking him as part of this argument to see if he’d notice. He didn’t. I love this song because it captures the way we work together really accurately — we’re super emo and take a lot from each other and put each other through a lot.
