Dua Lipa sues Samsung for $15 million over TV box image use

Dua Lipa has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the company of using her image to help sell TVs.

The complaint was filed in California on Friday, May 8. It says Samsung began using a backstage photo of Lipa on TV cardboard packaging last year without her permission and without paying her.

According to the suit, Lipa asked the company to stop once she learned about it. The filing says Samsung was “dismissive and callous” and refused the request, per Variety.

“Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever,” the lawsuit states. “Ms. Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.”

The complaint says Lipa owns the copyright to the photo, which was taken backstage at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2024. It also argues that Samsung benefited from the impression that Lipa had endorsed the product, something the suit says she has not done.

The filing describes Lipa as selective about endorsements and says she has built a “premium brand.” It also says customers appeared to respond to the packaging as if it were a sign of approval.

“I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it,” wrote one commenter, quoted in the complaint.

“I’d get that TV just because Dua Lipa is on it,” wrote another. “That’s how obsessed I am. That’s how much I love her.”

Another wrote that if you need to sell something, “Just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it.”

The lawsuit includes copyright, California right of publicity, federal Lanham Act, and trademark claims.

Samsung has not yet commented.

Earlier this month, Lipa curated the Southbank Centre’s 2026 London Literature Festival. This week, she also made a surprise appearance during Tame Impala’s headline show at London’s O2 Arena.
