Lambchop, the Nashville project led by Kurt Wagner, announced a new album today. Punching The Clown is due August 21 via Peak Vinyl/Merge in North America and City Slang internationally. The announcement arrives with a lead single, Weakened.
The record was tracked at Justin Vernon’s April Base studio in Wisconsin. Andrew Broder of Fog co-wrote and recorded with Wagner. Ryan Olson is credited as producer. Justin Vernon contributes banjo on Weakened. The single also features a children’s choir.
About the single: Weakened is a sparse song written by Wagner and Broder. Vocally it pairs Wagner’s idiosyncratic delivery with layered choral voices. The lyrics read as a first-person meditation on the vulnerable and isolated.
“in early 2024 i heard a song on the radio on my way to get some gas. just a minimal single chord strummed banjo and a small group of voices.”
Wagner has cited lined-out singing, an a cappella call-and-response tradition with roots in Scotland and Appalachia, as an influence on the record’s aesthetic.
