Mixtape, out today from Beethoven & Dinosaur, is a short '90s-set coming-of-age game focused on music supervision and a licensed soundtrack.

Mixtape, a new video game from Melbourne studio Beethoven & Dinosaur, is out today. The game follows three teenagers trying to make it to a mythic house party on their last day of school while avoiding getting caught.
Beethoven & Dinosaur are the studio behind the music-themed platformer The Artful Escape. In Mixtape, music is a central element of the narrative. The lead character, Stacey Rockford, wants to become a music supervisor in New York.
According to The New York Times, the game is “a small, focused, evocative game” that can be completed in roughly three hours. The review also places the story in a ’90s-like setting.
The title does not appear to map out the mechanics of the music industry. Instead, the game treats music supervising as a narrative and tonal device within its short runtime.
The Mixtape soundtrack is a major talking point. It includes songs from Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division, the Cure, Devo, Siouxsie And the Banshees, Iggy Pop, Roxy Music, Portishead, Lush, and Silverchair. The game also features deeper cuts from Alice Coltrane, the Chi-Lites, and B. J. Thomas.
Trailers and promotional material emphasize the licensed music and period feel. Check out a trailer below.
