Sam Smith said the outfit they wore to the Met Gala on May 4, 2026, was extremely heavy. The singer made the comment on the red carpet outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The ensemble was designed by Christian Cowan. Smith spoke with Emma Chamberlain for Vogue while Cowan stood nearby. On camera Smith called it ‘the heaviest thing I’ve ever worn in my life.’ They added: ‘It’s a massive workout. It’s making me alert. It’s like a corset on the shoulders.’

Cowan gave the specific weight: 52 pounds. He also posted detailed construction notes on his Instagram. The jacket’s embellishment used 255,000 crystals and beads. Cowan listed roughly 2,000 hours of hand sewing for the piece.

On Instagram Cowan described the look as ‘a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam.’ The designer and Smith have been publicly linked since around 2023.

The 2026 Met Gala was cochaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour. The theme was ‘Costume Art’ and the dress code read ‘Fashion Is Art.’ Other attendees included Bad Bunny, Sabrina Carpenter, Madonna and members of BLACKPINK.
