The Rolling Stones’ Foreign Tongues Is Due July 10 and Includes an Amy Winehouse Cover

The Rolling Stones will release Foreign Tongues on July 10. The 14-track LP includes a cover of Amy Winehouse‘s “You Know I’m No Good” and contributions from Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood and Robert Smith.

Ronnie Wood on The Tonight Show

Ronnie Wood appeared on The Tonight Show on Thursday night, May 7, to talk about the new record, his upcoming solo dates and his painting. Wood, 78, described the album and played harmonica with host Jimmy Fallon and the house band.

Fallon read from a vinyl copy and noted the Winehouse cover. He also offered an early listen impression, calling a Wood solo on the album “fantastic.” The track “Back In Your Life” features the solo Fallon praised.

Wood said he recorded the solo in one take. “It came out my guitar, the feeling, you know,” he said. He added that he cut the part “the day Brian Wilson died, last June,” and while still reeling from Sly Stone’s passing days earlier.

Wood is preparing a run of solo shows in the U.K. and Continental Europe this summer, his first solo tour in 16 years. He will also stage an exhibition of his artwork in Germany in November.

The Stones have already released two songs from Foreign Tongues: opener “Rough and Twisted” and lead single “In the Stars.” The album is led by core members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Wood and features a roster of guest artists.

Winehouse and the Stones previously shared a stage at the U.K.’s Isle of Wight Festival in June 2007, when she joined the band for a rendition of “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.”

Wood used the Tonight Show appearance to revisit his early life in music and art. He spoke about learning from older siblings, receiving his first guitar, financial struggles before fame, and forming The Faces with Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart.

“It’s inspirational to do” music and art, Wood said. “You know, I’m lucky enough to do a solo thing with the painting, and then be a part of a band, you know, part of a group, to express musically. It’s such a gift, you know, to be able to do both.”

Wood’s Tonight Show visit followed a separate appearance by Mick Jagger, who had been on the program 24 hours earlier for a comedy sketch.
