The Wiggles Say They Barely Know Oasis: ‘I Am So Out of Touch’

The Wiggles admitted they barely know Oasis during a Nova radio game, with Lucia Field confusing the band and Anthony Field saying, “I am so out of touch.”

The Wiggles have set off a fresh round of online reaction after admitting on Australian radio that they are not especially familiar with Oasis, with Lucia Field even mistaking the Britpop band for The Beatles during a game on air.

The exchange happened when Anthony Field and Lucia Field, who are currently performing as the Blue Wiggles, appeared on Nova 96.9’s Ricki-Lee & Tim. The hosts played Oasis’ 1995 single “Wonderwall,” and Lucia said she did not know it.

“Controversially, I like Blur more … that is why I have no idea,” Lucia said, nodding to the long-running Britpop rivalry between Oasis and Blur.

The remark caught the hosts off guard. Tim Blackwell replied, “No! That is gonna go everywhere.”

Anthony Field then added his own story about being out of step with the band’s legacy. He said that during a visit to Abbey Road Studios with his son, he bought what he thought was a Paul McCartney and John Lennon poster, only for his son to tell him, “They’re the guys from Oasis.”

“I am so out of touch mate.”

Anthony did at least recognize the title of the track being played. “I know they had a song called ‘Wonderwall,’” he said.

The moment lands as Oasis are back in the center of pop culture attention thanks to their reunion tour, which has drawn huge demand and sold out stadiums across several continents. Led by Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher, the group scored eight No. 1 albums in the U.K. and became one of the defining rock acts of the 1990s with songs like “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger” and “Champagne Supernova.”

In the U.S., “Wonderwall” remains their biggest hit. It peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1996 and spent time at No. 1 on Alternative Airplay.

The Wiggles, for their part, have continued widening their reach beyond children’s music, with recent collaborations across pop, country and rock and a growing adult audience through festival appearances and viral crossover moments.

The group appeared on the Nova program to promote their new song “Sparkle.”
