“Weird Al” Yankovic Broadway Musical ‘Dare To Be Stupid’ Is Officially in Development

A “Weird Al” Yankovic Broadway musical, Dare To Be Stupid, is officially in development with Scott Brown, Anthony King and Alex Timbers.

A “Weird Al” Yankovic Broadway musical is officially in development. Dare To Be Stupid, named for his 1985 album, is being put together by writers Scott Brown and Anthony King, with Alex Timbers producing, according to Playbill.

Brown and King previously worked on Beetlejuice and Gutenberg! The Musical!. Timbers also has Broadway credits that include Moulin Rouge!.

Yankovic, never one to understate a point, issued a statement about the project.

“Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community,” Yankovic says in a very serious statement. “Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.”

Timbers said he first connected with Yankovic’s music through the release of Dare To Be Stupid and has been a fan since then. He described the show as an original story built around Yankovic’s songbook and said the material is “unexpected, subversive, meta, and hilarious.”

“Now, it’s a dream come true to work with one of my comedy heroes bringing an original story set to his beloved songbook to the stage,” Timbers said.

Seaview is producing the musical. CEO Greg Nobile said the project fits the kind of title that does not come around often and pointed to Yankovic’s place in American culture.

“Dare To Be Stupid feels like the kind of musical that only comes around once in a while — wildly original, deeply funny, and powered by the unmistakable heart that has made ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic a singular voice in American culture,” Nobile said. “Beneath the absurdity and the joy, is a show about creativity, individuality, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself.”

He added that the company is thrilled to be working with Yankovic, Timbers, Brown, and King on the production.
