John Dwyer Surprise-Releases New Solo EP Heathen Axe

Osees frontman John Dwyer has surprise-released his six-track solo EP Heathen Axe, recorded on a Vestax MR44 four-track with Tom Dolas and John Hodge in fast, loosely improvised sessions.

John Dwyer has surprise-released a new six-song solo EP, Heathen Axe, via Bandcamp. The Osees leader said he set out to make what he called “a totally fried recording, quick and dirty” using a recently acquired Vestax MR44 four-track recorder.

In a message sent to subscribers, Dwyer described the EP as a “cathartic expulsion” and said he used the same model recorder heard on earlier Coachwhips and OCS material. After writing riffs over the course of a week, he brought them to Tom Dolas and John Hodge. “We ran them one time and then recorded them on the second go,” he wrote, adding that the sessions were loosely improvised, unhinged, and tracked with “everything turned all the way up.”

The release is billed as a Dwyer solo project, though it features collaborators from his wider orbit. Dwyer also framed the EP with a reference point list for listeners, citing Mainliner, High Rise, Comets on Fire, and Hair Police.

“ATENNNNNTION HUUUUMANOIDS … HOPE YOU DIG / PLAY LOUD”
